Are these tools genuinely free, or is there a catch?

The tools we recommend fall into two categories: Open Source (like GIMP, Audacity, and Kdenlive), which are 100% free forever built by communities, and "Freemium" tiers (like DaVinci Resolve or Buffer), which offer highly capable free versions subsidized by enterprise users. We only recommend freemium tools if the free tier is actually usable for production.

Will these programs put watermarks on my videos or exports?

No. We specifically avoid recommending any software that forces a watermark on your final render. DaVinci Resolve, Kdenlive, and OBS all export clean, watermark-free files. (Note: DaVinci Resolve will show a watermark only if you try to apply a Studio-exclusive effect, but standard editing and exporting is clean).

Can I use open-source software for commercial client work?

Yes. The vast majority of Open Source licenses (like the GPL) allow you to use the software for commercial purposes. You can edit a video in Kdenlive or design a logo in Inkscape and sell that service to a client without owing any royalties to the software creators.

My laptop is quite old. Will these heavy programs run?

It depends on the tool. Programs like DaVinci Resolve require a decent GPU and at least 16GB of RAM. However, tools like Audacity, Kdenlive, and Inkscape are incredibly lightweight and can run smoothly on budget laptops that are 5-7 years old.

Why shouldn't I just pirate the expensive software?

Aside from being illegal and unethical, pirated software is the number one vector for malware, ransomware, and keystroke loggers. As a creator, your files and accounts are your livelihood. Don't risk compromising your entire system when free, legal alternatives are just as capable.
